The Technical SEO Checklist That Actually Moves Rankings in 2026

Most SEO advice is content-first. But if search engines cannot crawl and understand your site, no amount of writing will save it. Here is where to start.
Technical SEO is the foundation everything else is built on. You can publish the best article on the internet, but if the page is not crawlable, indexable and fast, it will never reach the audience it deserves. Before touching keywords, we always audit the plumbing.
Start with crawlability. Open Google Search Console and check the Pages report for anything marked 'Discovered — currently not indexed' or 'Crawled — currently not indexed'. These are pages Google knows about but has chosen not to rank. Usually the cause is thin content, duplication, or a slow response time on that URL.
Next, fix your site architecture. Every important page should be reachable within three clicks of the homepage, and your internal linking should point authority toward the pages you actually want to rank. Orphan pages — those with no internal links — are almost always underperforming.
Then comes speed. Core Web Vitals are a genuine ranking factor, and more importantly they affect conversion. Compress and lazy-load images, defer non-critical scripts, and serve modern image formats. A site that loads in under 1.5 seconds has a real advantage over one that takes four.
Finally, structured data. Adding schema markup for your organisation, articles, products and FAQs helps search engines understand context and can earn you rich results that dramatically improve click-through rate. It is one of the highest-leverage jobs on this list and one of the most neglected.
